Acts of Kindness

By Lucy Yang
The honey
wraps around my tongue
thick enough
to choke

it’s too much
I open my mouth
voice drowned
by sweetness

but it’s too much
I protest
with my limbs –
– throat closing.

Grieving

By Lucy Yang
In the sinking light
the table was dusty

in the vase
lilies were bunched
some still blooming

a reminder of the love
and previous loves
that opened
then closed.

Lucy Yang was born to first-generation Chinese immigrants. She teaches high school English in Vancouver and is completing a Master’s program in literacy education at the University of British Columbia. Her poetry has appeared in Ricepaper Magazine and The Maynard.
